What will you do if your cruise is canceled in Halong Bay!

You’ve got a good deal and now are dreaming about an interesting trip with beautiful cabin, delicious food, friendly staff waiting for you in Halong Bay, Vietnam. You’ll be relaxing on the sundeck while the boat cruises around the rising islands in the fresh air and quiet atmosphere.

Your dream smells when you arrive at the dock and the local authority announces that all cruises are canceled due to the weather conditions while it is still sunny! Is this a joke? you may think. But it happens quite often to the cruises in Halong Bay, a world heritage site in Vietnam, epecially during the summer time from May to August.

So what will you do? If this is the first time you come to Vietnam, you may be down from the heaven to the hell as it takes 3 hours and a half by bus from Hanoi to Halong Bay already and it will take that time to return Hanoiagain.

You cannot do anything about this, but you’ll feel better if you think about this situation before you go. When it happens, you can consider the following options:

- Contact your cruise’s operator, tour guide or your booking travel agent to check if your money will return to your pocket. Normally, it will be back to you in full if you book reputable cruises but in some cases, the cruiseor travel agent can ask you for a little support by paying the bus trip or booking fee which is just a small money since the situation is out of their hand. How much money you will be refunded depending on where you were announced the cancellation news!

+ If you are still in Hanoi and have not started the trip yet, all money paid will be refunded to you, except the payment fee if it was used to process the payment/deposit for you already!

+ If you arrived at Halong Bay pier and the cruise informs you the bad news, you will pay the transfer fee only. Some cruises will not charge you this fee although the cruises are also disappointed like you.

+ If you are on your cruise already and are visiting Halong Bay when the bad news comes such as your cruise is not allowed to stay overnight, other arrangements will be made by the cruise for you upon your agreement. Otherwise, you will pay for the services and time that you have spent on the cruise.

- Stay overnight at a hotel in Halong City then book a day trip to visit Halong Bay in the next day. This will be a good choice if the weather seems to be better in the coming day. All hotels in Halong Bay can help you with the booking. You should check some recommended hotels before you go!

- Return Hanoi and enjoy another night in Hanoi. The hotel in Hanoi can arrange the room for you or if it is fully booked, they can also arrange for you at other hotel. Although many people don’t like Hanoi but if you just try a little bit with help from hotel receptionist or local people, you may find something interesting such as a cyclo tour through 36 streets in the old quarter of Hanoi, a water puppet show at Thang Long theatre or just a cup of famous Vietnamese coffee at a cozy restaurant to enjoy the daily life with local people.

No mater what alternative you can come up with, just prepare your mind before you get in the car and enjoy your trip!

Best cruise in Halong Bay – How to select!

Halong, literally “Descending dragon Bay”, is a true wonder of Vietnam and natural heritage site which is recognised by UNESCO. Around 3,000 limestone islets rise from the emerald waters, and no matter how many pictures, stories, and movies of Halong Bay you come across, you still need to see it with your own eyes.Cruising around Halong Bay can be enjoyed from small junk boats or luxury cruises. There are about 500 licensed boats, and on any given day, up to 300 of them will be plying the water.

Halong Bay must be seen with your own eyes, but make sure to pick the right cruise. Therefore, choosing the right cruise for your vacation can be a hard job. Here are some tips for you to pick the best cruise in HalongBay.

Don’t look for the cheapest option. Ask what’s included in the price and if safety equipment is provided. Please remember that you’ll get what you pay for in Halong Bay.

Better prices are often offered by reputable travel agents or specialists. The prices listed on cruises’ websites are public prices which are more expensive than travel agents’ prices. In the low season from May to September, the prices can be 20 – 30% lower than the high seasons.

Budget cruises are often full of guests and you can’t do much about the quality of food and services. Mid-range cruises are better in terms of cabins, food and services. They can also easily adapt your special requests. The luxury cruises offer additional services such as wifi, or massage. The food is better as are the cabins.

Check the weather before you go. If storms and rain are forecast, don’t go because the cruises can be cancelled at short notice by the Authority of Halong Bay. The best time to visit is April or November.

Do your homework before you book the cruise. There are hundreds of cruises in Halong Bay which means there are thousands of tour operators and travel agents selling these cruises. Prices vary and can be hundred of dollars different. So research before booking can save you money.

There are some reputable cruises in Halong Bay such as Indochina Sails. Backed by 10 years experience hosting international travelers on the tranquil waters of Halong Bay, Indochina Sails has set a new standard for luxury cruising. Now widely known as a number one choice for discerning travelers, Indochina Sails operates a fleet of four newly built wooden junks designed in time-honoured traditional Vietnamese style, with contemporary and luxurious cabins and facilities. Halong Bay needs to be preserved and promoted the values of culture.

On 24th July 2012, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST) and the Quang Ninh People’s Committee held an int'l conference on “preserving and developing the values of Ha Long Bay world natural heritage - new vision” in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province.

At the seminar, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh, said that Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage, offers beautiful scenery and attracts millions of tourists, bringing back in trillions of VND per year to the province.

However, Halong bay is facing major challenges in its course of development, Anh said, suggesting that Quang Ninh province should focus on the quality and efficiency of tourism and take responsibility for preserving and promoting the values of this precious natural attraction.

Tran Minh Chinh, secretary of the provincial Party Committee, said Quang Ninh is integrating the development of Halong Bay tourism with its plan to boost sustainable economic growth and environmental protection.

The provincial and national strategies for tourism development until 2020, with a vision towards 2030, defineHalong Bay as a key tourism destination that will attract great numbers of both domestic and foreign tourists, he added.

Chinh also stressed that the province aims to develope a tourism trademark, explore for new sightseeing sites, promote environmental protection and raise public awareness of preserving Halong Bay.

Katherine Muller-Matin, UNESCO Chief Representative in Vietnam, emphasized the State and the private sector should join efforts to protect and ads Halong Bay on a national and international scale.

According to reports from Quang Ninh province, Halong Bay receives an average of 2.5 million tourists each year, including one million foreigners. In several recent years, Halong Bay and the surrounding areas have recently attracted over 40 foreign investment projects with total capital of more than US$1 billion.
